Our story

kitesurfing lessons

Growing up in Papua New Guinea with the Pacific Ocean as his garden, our founder Patrick fell in love with all things to do with the sea.

His globe-trotting father and equally-adventurous mother inspired him to see the world, take chances, and follow his passions.

So now, after 35 years of windsurfing and over a decade of working as a professional kite & wing instructor in Greece & Baja, Patrick is ready to launch his very own school on the windy beaches of Los Barriles.

Join us for our inaugural season, in partnership with Green Dot Café on the Costa Brava beach road, where we’re excited to introduce our guests to the addictive world of windsports.

 Your questions

  • This is a common misconception.

For kitesurfing, very little strength is required, as flying the kite is all about finesse, control, and a delicate touch. You aren't holding the kite after all... you're harnessed in!

In fact, we find women tend to learn faster than men, who often try to use strength rather than skill.

Wingfoiling can be more of an aerobic exercise, but ultimately technique and control play a larger part, along with a sense of balance.

But don't worry - these skills come quickly, and with some top tips from our pro instructors, you'll be up and away in just a few short hours.

  • Absolutely.

Our job - more than anything else - is to ensure you're safe at all times.

In addition to protective equipment such as helmets, buoyancy aids, and wetsuits, our pro instructors will be with you throughout the learning process. This means either holding on to you, swimming in the sea alongside you, or on a jet ski next to you.

And as a precautionary measure, rescue jet skis are there in the event of a more serious issue.

  • The short answer is: it depends.

For kitesurfing, it takes 9-12 hours of lessons for most students to become a safe, independent kitesurfer.

For wingfoiling, it takes just 4-6 hours of lessons for most students to become safe and independent, although it often takes many more hours of practicing on your own to become truly proficient.

With all wind and watersports, "time on the water" is a phrase you'll hear often as the key to success.

  • If you drive across the beach of Los Barriles on a windy day, you'll likely spot kitesurfers and wingfoilers ranging from young teenagers to 75+, and everything between!

It's never too late to learn these sports. A basic level of fitness, the ability to swim, and a desire to learn is all that's required.

For kitesurfing, the minimum age for students is 12 years old.

  • If you like La Ventana, you'll love Los Barriles!

With one of the most beautiful beaches in Baja, you'll enjoy wide, sandy, and uncrowded beaches. No chaotic, stressful launches and landings.

Our town has a bit more to offer as well, as Los Barriles is a popular year-round destination known also for sportfishing tournaments, world-class pickleball facilities, rewarding mountain biking trails, and limitless off-roading.

There are many more beachfront and boutique hotels, restaurants, bars with live music, and large grocery stores, all centered around a main downtown center.

Additionally, Los Barriles is just a 45-minute drive from the main airport (SJD).

The wind stats are roughly the same as La Ventana as both spots enjoy the "El Norte." And the sea, while less flat, has organized, rolling swells fun for riding and jumping.
